Getting found

Why Your Google Business Profile Matters More Than Your Website

Most Arizona customers find you on Google Maps before they ever visit your website. Here's how to make sure you show up.

October 24, 2026

When someone in Tucson searches for "plumber near me" at ten o'clock on a Sunday night, they're not clicking through to websites. They're scrolling Google Maps on their phone, looking at star ratings, checking if you're open, and tapping the call button on whoever looks trustworthy.

Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing potential customers see. For many Arizona service businesses, it drives more calls than a website ever will. Yet most owners set it up once and forget about it.

Here's what actually matters.

Claim and Verify Your Profile

If you haven't claimed your Google Business Profile, someone else might be editing it. Customers can suggest changes, and sometimes they're wrong. Competitors have been known to mark businesses as permanently closed.

Go to google.com/business and claim your listing. Google will mail a postcard with a verification code to your business address. Once verified, you control what people see.

If you operate from home or travel to customer locations, you can still have a profile. Just hide your address and set your service area to the cities you cover.

Fill Out Every Section Completely

Google rewards complete profiles with better visibility. That means:

  • Business name, category, and description
  • Phone number that actually rings
  • Website link if you have one
  • Service area or physical address
  • Hours of operation, including holidays
  • Services you offer
  • Attributes like "women-owned" or "veteran-owned"

The description is not the place for keywords stuffed together. Write two or three sentences about what you do and who you serve. "Happy Brush Painters has served Phoenix homeowners since 2015 with interior and exterior painting, cabinet refinishing, and color consulting" tells people what they need to know.

Post Photos Every Month

Profiles with recent photos get more engagement. Customers want to see your work, your team, and your location before they call.

Take photos with your phone. They don't need to be professional. Show:

  • Completed projects
  • Your truck or workspace
  • You and your team
  • Before and after shots

Post at least a few new photos every month. It signals that you're active and current. A profile with one grainy photo from 2019 makes people wonder if you're still in business.

Keep Your Hours Accurate

Nothing frustrates customers like driving across town to find you closed. If your hours change for a holiday, update your profile. If you close early one Thursday for a family emergency, mark it.

Google lets you set special hours for holidays. Use that feature. Arizonans appreciate knowing you're closed for Thanksgiving or open on Martin Luther King Day.

Respond to Every Review

Reviews matter, but your responses matter just as much. When someone leaves a five-star review, thank them by name. When someone complains, address it professionally and offer to make it right.

People reading reviews pay attention to how you handle criticism. A calm, helpful response to a one-star review can actually build trust.

Never argue. Never get defensive. If a review is fake or violates Google's policies, flag it. Otherwise, respond with grace.

Answer Questions

Customers can ask questions directly on your profile. Google notifies you by email, but check your profile regularly anyway.

Common questions for Arizona businesses: Do you offer free estimates? Are you licensed and insured? Do you work in Scottsdale? How quickly can you come out?

Answer quickly and thoroughly. Other potential customers will see your answers.

Use Posts to Stay Visible

Google lets you publish short posts directly to your profile. Think of them like social media updates that show up in search results.

Post about:

  • Seasonal services ("AC tune-ups before summer heat")
  • New services or team members
  • Tips related to your trade
  • Community events you're involved in

Posts expire after seven days, so you need to add new ones regularly. It's a small effort that keeps your profile looking active.

Monitor Your Insights

Google shows you how people find your profile and what they do once they're there. Check your insights monthly.

You'll see:

  • How many people viewed your profile
  • Whether they found you through search or Maps
  • How many clicked your website
  • How many called
  • How many asked for directions

If lots of people view your profile but nobody calls, maybe your photos need work or your reviews are weak. If people ask for directions but you're service-based with no storefront, hide your address and clarify that you come to them.

Don't Ignore It

Your Google Business Profile is free. It takes an hour to set up properly and fifteen minutes a month to maintain. For most Arizona service businesses, it's the single most important marketing tool you have.

A complete, active profile with good photos and reviews will bring you more customers than almost anything else you can do online. Treat it like the storefront it is.

If you want more ways to get found by local customers, you can add your business free to the directory or explore businesses by category like auto repair or Mexican restaurants.
